You’ll start at the centerpiece Grand Palace, in the heart of the city, strolling around the complex and glancing into the Temple of the Emerald Buddha. Up next: Wat Pho Temple, the oldest in the city and home of the gilded reclining Buddha. On this small sample of the Thai capital, you’ll have a chance to see how the country’s heavy focus on spirituality weaves throughout every part of its culture—especially when you wind down the day with a rejuvenating, full-body Thai massage.

Today, you’ll head into the verdant highlands of Mae Taeng district, about 90 minutes north of Chiang Mai’s old city, where the Mae Taeng River carves through lush jungle valleys on its way down from the mountains. The 6-mile stretch you’ll raft is one of Northern Thailand’s most exhilarating, with an exciting mix of Class II–III rapids and calmer sections framed by bamboo groves and distant highland peaks. Leave the mountains behind and fly south to Krabi, a coastal province on Thailand’s Andaman Sea where dramatic limestone karsts—jagged rock formations shaped by millions of years of wind and water—rise straight out of turquoise water and the pace of life is dictated more by the tides than the clock. After arriving at your hotel near Ao Nang and grabbing lunch on your own, you’ll set off for a sunset visit to an ethical no-contact elephant sanctuary. Ao Thalane Bay is considered one of the finest kayaking destinations in all of Thailand—and one of its most pristine. This protected coastal ecosystem is a labyrinth of tidal channels threading through dense mangrove forest, flanked by limestone cliffs that rise almost vertically from the water. You’ll paddle through it all at water level, slipping past ancient sea gypsy paintings on the karst walls and weaving through narrow corridors where crab-eating macaques forage in the aerial roots overhead. It’s the kind of place where the only sounds are cicadas, your paddle, and the occasional splash of something just out of sight. This evening, learn about Thailand’s national sport during an optional Muay Thai boxing class, or simply unwind at the resort.

If a slower day sounds more your speed, Krabi has no shortage of options: soak up the coastal scene at Ao Nang, take a long-tail boat to Railay beach, or book a spa treatment back at the hotel.

Climate considerations
- Thailand has a tropical climate with high temperatures and humidity year-round.
- There are three main seasons: hot (March to May), rainy (June to October), and cool (November to February).
- Even in the cool season, daytime temperatures typically range from 80°F to 90°F.
- The rainy season sees brief but intense daily rainfall, usually in the afternoon or evening.
- Chiang Mai sits at a higher elevation in the northern mountains, so temperatures tend to run cooler than the rest of the country—particularly in the mornings and evenings during cool season, when it can dip into the low 60s°F.
- Krabi, on the Andaman Sea coast, is hotter and more humid year-round, with temperatures rarely dropping below 85°F during the day. The monsoon season here runs roughly May through October, bringing heavier and more sustained rainfall than the north.
